CHAPTER FOUR
Caleb sat staring after the puzzling man he was sharing a house with. Every time he thought he had a handle on Nelson, something changed. Like now. Heâd have sworn that he wasnât the only one whoâd felt the heat as they sat side by side, knees brushing, hands touching over the drawings as he guided Nelsonâs pencil. Heâd been very aware of Nelsonâs size and presence, had been drawn to his deep laugh, the way he moved and the controlled strength in his hands. Even when Caleb had been concentrating on the art, some little part of him had been joyfully waiting for the moment when sex was on the menu again.
And then Nelson had shut him down, flat.
Caleb was⦠confused. He picked that word over hurt because after all, this wasnât a date; it was a chance meeting, a happenstance. With one round of really good sex. Which was why he was confused, because Nelson had been eager, even demanding, that time. Heâd sucked Caleb like he was water in the desert. And then disappeared without a word. And then come back as if nothing had changed. The last couple of hours had felt good and easy between them, until Caleb had assumed heâd been mistaken and another round was a given. But apparently it wasnât.
He wasnât vain about his looks. He knew he was gawky, not elegant, and his face was oval, not chiseled. His hair was an impossible mess and itâd been far too long since heâd cut it. His stubble was the result of forgetting to shave that morning, not some calculated look, but he wasnât a troll either, and Nelson had appeared to enjoy his body before. So why not now?
Eventually, he got himself to his feet, juggled the lantern into the scooter basket, and made his way down the hall to the bathroom. He washed up a bit, and hesitated over the idea of a shower and prepping. But sex was clearly not happening, a shower was a pain with the cast and the water would probably be cold. There was really no point doing more than making sure he wasnât gross down there, just in case. He finger-brushed his teeth with Nelsonâs toothpaste. He also thought about trying to get a comb through his hair, but heâd have to look for a comb and why bother? He was just going to sleep it into bigger snarls. He straightened his clothes. The sweatpants were loose enough to sleep in, since he wasnât going to have company to keep him warm.
When he rolled out awkwardly, lantern in hand, Nelson was waiting in the hall, looking sheepish. âHey. You found what you needed?â
âSure. I borrowed a bit of toothpaste.â
âFine. No problem.â A blast of wind rattled around the house, and they both glanced down the hall.
âWhat about the battery radio?â Nelson asked. âWould you like to have it on, just in case?â
Caleb hesitated, then went ahead and said it. âCan we not? I mean,
